Where to get warm

The summer is over and, slowly but surely, autumn is approaching. And while we’ve been able to enjoy the last of the sunshine recently, it won’t be long before the rain comes. And the rain really likes it here in the Liberec Region. On days like that many of us would much prefer to be lying in bed with a mug of hot chocolate and watching our favourite movies. However, we’ll show you that even when it’s cold and wet outside we still have plenty of tips for places to warm up when the weather doesn’t work out!

As Liberec is the ideal place for a family holiday, we have to mention the local holy trinity of iQLandia, the neighbouring Centrum Babylon and the DinoPark. IQLandia offers more than 400 interactive exhibits, which children can try out for themselves. Programs are also held on a regular basis, in iQLandia itself (such as the Musical Fountain, the Fiery Tornado, the Lightning Symphony), as well as at the iQPlanetarium (Journey through Time, Dawn of the Space Age, Space Odyssey) and iQFablab (Creative Workshop).

The Centrum Babylon contains the Aquapark, where you can enjoy a laser show three times a day; the Lunapark, where you can play indoor adventure golf, have a ride on a chain carousel, zoom around the racetrack or leap about on a trampoline; the newly opened Funpark is designed for active kids’ entertainment, where the children can get some exercise and develop their movement skills; or the iQpark, which takes you into the world of science and technology.

The DinoPark is perfect for all lovers of Jurassic Park and its ancient history. This indoor entertainment park, which is open all year round, can be found on 3 floors of the Plaza shopping centre. Little explorers can learn something about the development of the planet Earth from the Big Bang, through the reign of the dinosaurs to the present day.

And we don’t have to travel far for another tip. To visit a typical and unusually well preserved example of traditional folk architecture we head off to Pojizeří to see the Dlaskův statek farm in Dolánky u Turnova, which is a Czech National Cultural Monument. This is a former freehold and village magistrate’s house built in the valley of the River Jizera in 1716. Inside, the farm displays regularly changing exhibits depicting the lives of our ancestors, accompanied by seasonal demonstrations of weaving and pre-weaving techniques, flax and wool spinning, fabric dyeing demonstrations and other programs.

For a practical yet still entertaining outing we take a look at Zdislava – the home of the Papyrea family manufactory specialising in hand-made paper. The firm offers guided tours explaining the history of production, the materials used (also including horse manure) and basically paper in general. And anyone interested can also try the group creative workshop, which is fun for children and adults alike.

And we finish with something for you art buffs! We recommend a visit to the Bohemian Paradise Gallery, with pictures for everyone, where you can see some valuable works by famous masters as well as paintings by less well-known artists; the Prostor 228 gallery presents award-winning artists from the contemporary painting scene, while the municipal MY Gallery in Jablonec hosts fine art exhibitions linked with regional cultural history and topography.
