High quality and a wide choice of winter sports – those are what make the Liberec Region one of the best destinations for a winter holiday. And we have to agree, as the Jizera Mountains, the Ještěd mountain ridge, the Lusatian Mountains and the Giant Mountains all offer perfect conditions for downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and other winter adrenalin sports. So why not make the most of the opportunity?

And where else to start than the Ještěd Ski Resort – the perfect place to spend active leisure time. The resort offers 4 cable cars and 6 chairlifts to take you safely and quickly to the top of the downhill slope. The slopes are suitable for families with children, but also for more experienced and demanding skiers. There’s also plenty of fun for non-skiers too, however. What about trying the sledging track? It runs from the Skalka top cable car station to the Horní Hanychov tram stop, making it 3 kilometres long. And how better to recall the joy of childhood than a ride on a good sledge, shovel or backcountry sled? Everyone has a different name for it, but the experience is the same!

And if racing down a winter slope is not enough adrenalin for you… have you heard of the Ice Wall in Liberec? During the winter this former granite quarry right in the heart of the city is transformed into an ideal training site, offering visitors a huge number of routes of varying difficulty.

From Ještěd we now move a little further up north, to Bedřichov, where the famous Jizerská magistrála (Jizera Mountain Arterial Skiing Track Network) awaits us. All winter cross-country skiers are sure to appreciate the fact that the routes are regularly maintained, so we can all enjoy any of the tracks, which together cover a total of 170 kilometres.

However, the Giant Mountains undoubtedly attract the most visitors. Ski mountaineers can head off to climb around Špindlerův Mlýn, Pec pod Sněžkou or Rokytnice nad Jizerou. These places offer some great routes that are not too difficult, so you can also enjoy them with the children.

You can also make the most of the snow and get to know the area around Špindlerův Mlýn from the seat of a snow scooter. Just visit one of the local hire centres, pay attention to the important instructions, put on your safety gear and you’re ready to go! And you can be sure that this is an experience you’ll never forget.

And what about a ride on an inflatable rubber inner tube? This hugely popular adrenalin attraction, in a special type of snow toboggan, is an extraordinary experience for anyone, regardless of age. In some places there’s a special chairlift to take you up, while else where you have to climb to the top yourself before hurtling back down along a winding track. You can also enjoy the unique atmosphere of an evening ride on a floodlit track. Snowtubing can be found at places such as Rokytnice nad Jizerou, Benecko and also inBedřichov.

Nestled in its romantic setting near Bezděz Castle, when the conditions are good in the winter Lake Mácha is the ideal place to go skating on a frozen lake. Don’t forget, however, that the ice should be 18 to 25 cm thick for it to be safe to skate on. Lake Mácha has the advantage that it freezes easily thanks to the generally heavy frosts in the Doksy Basin and is rarely covered by a thick layer of snow. From the lake you get some wonderful views of Bezděz, Borný and the Kummerské pohoří mountains that line the Doksy Basin to the north. One interesting feature is the rocky little island of Myšlín that rises up from the middle of the lake. This body of water is more than 2 km long and, owing to its rugged shores, a walk around it covers some 7 km. So get your skates on and join us for a good glide around!

Winter time offers countless ways of enjoying some laid-back fun, from skiing, sledging and skating to snowshoeing. So pack your winter gear, a tasty bite to eat and join us in a visit to the Liberec Region. And don’t forget to follow us on our social networks, where you’ll find us under REGION LIBEREC, so you have the very latest updates about the winter resorts, snow conditions and other tips in the winter wonderland.
