Museums allow us to view a lot of history in one place. Here, we can soak up as much as we like regardless of what the weather is doing. A little history won’t kill anyone. :-)
The famed Máj (May) and K. H. Mácha Memorial in the Hospitálek log cabin in Doksy are inseparable from the most famous Czech lake. In the Šatlava Museum of Archaeology in Česká Lípa, you’ll learn a lot about how caves and overhanging rocks were used by humans from prehistoric times up to the 20th century. The same town also houses the Textile Printing Centre with an interactive exhibition.
The Čtyřlístek (Lucky Four) Museum in Doksy displays the evolution of comics of the same name. The Museum of Dolls and Teddy Bears in Troskovice is the only one of its kind in the Czech Republic. There is an exhibition of a private collection containing more than one thousand dolls and prams in Turnov.
The Museum of Glass Making in Kamenický Šenov dazzles visitors with its shiny cut glass and crystal light fixtures. You can buy replicas of antique glass, as well as modern and traditional glass jewelry in the Museum of Glass Making in Nový Bor. However, the largest museum displaying glass and jewelry is in Jablonec nad Nisou. Coal Mining Museums can be found in Jiřetín pod Jedlovou and Harrachov.
Learn how butter and bread used to be made in the Butter Museum in Bílý Kostel nad Nisou. In the Museum of Paper Beauty in Liberec, you’ll find yourself in an almost bygone age of paper postcards, greeting cards and writing paper.
A true Christmas can be experienced year round in the Museum of Nativity Scenes in Kryštofovo Údolí, in the Mini Museum of Glass Nativity Scenes in Železný Brod and at a private collection of paper nativity scenes in Bělá pod Bezdězem. You can see a moving nativity scene made by the blacksmith Jan Metelka in the National History and Geography Museum in Vysoké nad Jizerou.
The Czech genius and adventurer Jára Cimrman has his own museum in Příchovice. The Eduard Held Museum in Zákupy exhibits a unique display of Shrovetide and costumes. Fans of mammoth hunters will surely be amazed at the Eduard Štorch Museum in the village of Lobeč.
Those who are technologically inclined must go and see the Museum of Historic Fire Fighting Equipment in Chrastava, the Museum of Typewriters in Česká Kamenice, the Metoděj Vlach Aviation Museum, the Museum of Military History 8280 and the Škoda Museum, all of which are in Mladá Boleslav. You can generate your own electricity in the Museum of Renewable Energy Sources in Velké Hamry.
